Ingredients:
- 1 cup warm water (approx 110 degrees F)
- 1 tablespoon instant yeast
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 1 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 4 tablespoons olive oil
- 2 1/2 to 2 3/4 cups of unbleached all-purpose flour
Instructions:
Stand Mixer Method
- Mix Initial Ingredients: In a stand mixer bowl, add 1 cup of warm water, 1 tablespoon of instant yeast, 1 tablespoon of sugar, 1 1/2 teaspoons of salt, and 4 tablespoons of olive oil. Mix together and let stand for 5 minutes until the yeast begins to bubble.
- Add Flour Gradually: Add 1 cup of flour and mix with the dough hook for 3 to 5 minutes. Add another cup of flour and mix until well combined. Continue adding flour in 1/4 cup increments until a soft dough forms. The dough should stick to the bottom of the bowl but pull away from the sides.
- Knead Dough: Let the dough mix for about 8 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- First Rise: Take out the dough and place it on a well-floured surface. Shape the dough into a ball, cover, and allow to rise for 30 minutes.
- Shape Rolls: Shape the dough into 9-inch rolls and place them on a parchment-covered pan. Cover and allow to rise for 1 hour.
- Bake: Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Bake the rolls for 25 minutes. Allow to cool before slicing.
Bread Machine Method
- Mix Initial Ingredients: In the bread machine, add 1 cup of warm water, 1 tablespoon of instant yeast, 1 tablespoon of sugar, 1 1/2 teaspoons of salt, and 4 tablespoons of olive oil.
- Add Flour Gradually: Add 2 1/2 cups of flour to the bread machine. If needed, add up to another 1/4 cup of flour to achieve a soft dough that pulls away from the sides of the bread machine pan.
- Dough Cycle: Set the bread machine to the dough cycle and let it complete the cycle.
- Shape Rolls: Once the dough cycle is complete, remove the dough from the machine and place it on a well-floured surface. Shape the dough into a ball and then cut it into 4 even sections.
- Flatten each section and roll into 9-inch rolls. Place them on a parchment-covered pan. Cover and allow to rise for 1 hour.
- Bake: Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Bake the rolls for 25 minutes. Allow to cool before slicing.
Serving Suggestions
My daughter’s favorite way to enjoy these rolls is to make pizza subs in our toaster oven, using her special touch with DanO’s Cheesoning. Maybe I can convince her to share her recipe soon!
My son loves using these rolls for simple turkey or ham and cheese sandwiches. He likes them warmed slightly in the toaster oven or in the panini press for a delicious meal.
