There’s just something about gathering at the table for a good old-fashioned potluck. Whether it’s folding chairs in a church fellowship hall or picnic blankets under the trees, food has a way of bringing people together. And in a season where everything is shifting and speeding up, I think we need more of these slow, potluck-style moments.

At our church, we try to have a potluck the last Sunday of every month. Sometimes there’s a theme. Sometimes it’s whatever someone had in their freezer. But always—always—it’s about connection. The food is just the invitation. The goal is fellowship.

“And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works: not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together…” — Hebrews 10:24–25 (KJV)

Jesus broke bread with His disciples. He sat at the table with those who needed healing, hope, and truth. He showed us that meals are ministry—and when we show up to a potluck with something to share, we’re following in His footsteps.

If you’ve ever felt unsure of what to bring to a church potluck or small group dinner, I’ve gathered some of my favorite tried-and-true potluck recipes below. Each of these can be made ahead, scaled up, or tweaked to fit what you have in your pantry—perfect for your next potluck gathering.

🌿 Ministry at the Table

This fall, our church is doing something special. Each Sunday in October, after service, we’re heading to our local city park. Every family is bringing their own picnic and we’re playing outdoor games—just enjoying being together.

It’s simple, but powerful. A reminder that fellowship doesn’t have to be complicated. We just have to show up—with our presence, a smile, and maybe a dish to share.

So whether you’re contributing to a church potluck, planning a picnic, or just opening your home to a neighbor—you’re doing more than feeding bodies. You’re feeding hearts. You’re creating space for ministry.
