I have been posting about these lately only on social media. I have had a hard time deciding if I want to even share this recipe. I know that sounds selfish, but there is something inside of me that likes to hear my family say, “Mom, you make the best cookies ever!” It’s kind of the same thing with my French Bread and Sourdough Biscuit recipes. My family loves it, and sometimes you just want to keep it a secret.
I think I understand now why people have “Secret Recipes”.
I promise that I am not a selfish individual, nor do I ever boast about my cooking or baking skills. If anything, I love to share, and I am always boasting about my husband’s extraordinary cooking skills. As a matter of fact, one of the recipes I am sharing soon was made by him just so I could share it with you. He’s just amazing like that.
So after much prayer and fasting, I decided I needed to share with you this simple recipe.
I’m just kidding!
If you don’t have sourdough, then this recipe isn’t for you. However, I will tell you that you don’t know what you are missing out on by not having sourdough in your cookies. Not only is it good for the gut, but it enhances the flavor.
Now, you’ve got to keep this a secret from my dad. He has no idea that the chocolate chip cookies I make for him have sourdough in them. You see, he’s always so skeptical every time I bring something to him. He thinks I’ve made it all healthy. He needs healthy foods, but he refuses to acknowledge it.
One afternoon, I made homemade pizza dough for him and my mom. His first question was, “What did you do to it?” I had to assure him that it was normal pizza dough. I didn’t go into detail about how making it fresh and with fresh ingredients was so much better for him. I just said it was normal pizza dough. After his first two slices, he ended up asking for more pizza.
Since I know he loves chocolate chip cookies, we decided to bring my cookie dough and make some fresh cookies while there. Of course he was skeptical, but he still picked one up and ate it. We waited. His back was to us, so we didn’t know what he was thinking. Next thing I know, he’s picking up another one, then one more for good measure. I’m thinking it was a success. Of course, dad doesn’t say much, unless he just doesn’t like something.
That’s how amazing these cookies are!
I keep them in a container on my kitchen counter for my family to stop and grab one at their leisure. And since the recipe will make 3 dozen, I usually freeze 2 dozen for a later date. It makes it easy for my family to just go to the freezer and pull out a few cookies to bake fresh. Or if we entertain guests, it is a simple go-to for dessert.
Another reason I like to make these cookies ahead, they do take 4 hours to chill in the fridge. So be sure to give yourself enough time to allow them to set in the fridge before scooping them out onto the pan to bake.
I am going to let you in on another secret of mine for these cookies. I use sugar free chocolate chips. I have never told anyone. I think the only people that know are my daughter and husband. Everyone else that has tried these cookies were never told. They always rave on and on about how great these cookies are. I just kept silent. They never knew! I simply use Kroger Sugar Free Chocolate Chips. They have been the cheapest (not the cleanest) option I have found. If you prefer a more clean chocolate chip, Lily’s would be the better option. My goal is to cut sugar wherever possible when I can. Especially when it comes to my family.
This is a great item to take to your Thanksgiving dinner. I’m sure everyone will gobble them up, and it will leave them wanting more.
Please let me know if you try this recipe. Rate it for me! It really helps get my recipes out there.
For those of you who do not have sourdough, I have been thinking of posting a guide on how to create your own starter. Let me know in the comments below if you are interested. I want to be sure we have interest before going into detail.
Sourdough Chocolate Chip Cookies
Equipment
- 1 9×13 baking sheet
- Parchment paper or baking mat
Ingredients
- 1 ¼ cup softened butter
- 1 cup sugar
- 1 ¼ cup brown sugar
- ½ cup sourdough discard
- 2 large eggs (room temperature)
- 3 teaspoons vanilla
- 3 ½ cups unbleached all purpose flour or Kamut
- 1 ¼ teaspoon baking soda
- 1 ¼ teaspoon baking powder
- 2 teaspoons salt
- 2 10 oz bags chocolate chips *sugar free are great!
Instructions
- Cream butter, sugars, and sourdough discard for 5 minutes.
- Add eggs and vanilla and mix until combined.
- In separate bowl, whisk together flour baking soda, baking powder, and salt.
- Add dry ingredients and chocolate chips to the butter mixture. Stir until well combined.
- Cover bowl and allow to chill in fridge for 4 hours.
- Preheat the oven to 350℉.
- Spoon dough out, approximately 1 ½ tablespoons, and roll into balls. Place on the pan. *Optional: Gently press down with fingers.
- Bake 10-12 minutes. DO NOT over-bake. Let cool completely on the pan.
Notes
- You have the option to use kamut in this recipe. The recipe can use the same as the all-purpose flour, however, I recommend using 1/4 cup less and then gradually add in the last 1/4 cup. This will ensure that your mixture isn’t too dry.
- SUGAR FREE! Yes, you can use sugar free chocolate chips in this recipe and NO ONE will know the difference. I have done it every time I have made these cookies and never told anyone until now. Not one person has noticed the difference. DO IT! Anytime you can cut the sugar in a food it is always better for you.
- 1 10-ounce bag of chocolate chips is sufficient for my family. However, if you like a lot of chocolate chips, feel free to add more.
- Most importantly: DO NOT TELL MY DAD!
- ****I updated this recipe to include 2 10 ounce bags of chocolate chips. It was purely by accident, but it has become the favorite of everyone.*****
