I recently tested a recipe by Spend With Pennies for an apple pie filling. Having tried some of her recipes before and being pleased with the results, I figured this one would be worth a shot too. I’m gradually working my way up to making a cherry pie filling from scratch, as my niece requests a cherry pie for her birthday every year. To date, I have not made it from scratch, but I plan to change that this year. After all, making it from scratch is always better for you!
Why Make Your Own Apple Pie Filling?
Sure, buying a can of apple pie filling is simple, but do you really know what’s in it? With this recipe, you can easily make your own apple pie filling, and from my experience, it’s super-duper easy. If I can do it, then so can you!
Versatility of Apple Pie Filling
This filling can be used for apple pie, apple cobbler, or anything else you can dream up. I personally used my recipe for Berry Delicious Sourdough Cobbler and substituted the berries with this apple pie filling. OH MY GOODNESS! It was amazing!! I’m starting to wonder which I like better.
Substituting Sugar in Your Recipes
Another great thing is that you can always replace the sugar in the cobbler with Swerve substitutes, which helps cut the sweetness. I didn’t try it in the filling because replacing sugars in syrups or anything boiled can cause recrystallization, which I’m not very versed in. However, you can do your research and try something out for yourself. I’ve read that Boca Sweet seems to be a good alternative, but I haven’t tried it yet. So, definitely do your research. I would love for you to comment below and let me know if you tried out a sugar substitute in the filling and if it worked for you.
A Recipe Worth Sharing
With all that being said, I didn’t come up with this recipe. I simply found one, tried it, and decided it was worthy enough to share here on my blog. That will happen from time to time, so just be sure to follow the link. If you want to make it as I did with the cobbler filling, be sure to check out my Berry Delicious Sourdough Cobbler. You know that sourdough makes everything better.
