I can’t believe we’ve reached the end of our Marriage Matters Series! I hope you’ve enjoyed these posts as much as I’ve enjoyed putting them together. For our final Monday installment, I wanted to leave you with something practical to keep your relationship thriving: creative and budget-friendly date night ideas!

Disclosure: This post contains affiliate links. As an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases at no additional cost to you. Thank you for supporting Makin’ Macon!

Let’s get one thing straight. I love a fancy restaurant outing or splurging a bit for our anniversary. But realistically, we have school-aged kids and live on a budget. Yet, it’s essential to carve out alone time with your spouse whenever possible. Even if finding a sitter is challenging, you can have a date night at home after the kids are in bed. Our children are seven years apart, and my daughter graciously babysits the youngest sometimes, letting us sneak out for an evening alone. I will definitely return the favor when she presents me with grandchildren.

Now, let’s get creative! Here are five budget-friendly date night ideas for those times when money is tight, or even if you just like to (in the words of Dave Ramsey,) “live like no one else so that you can live like no one else.” Here is the key though, think outside the box! Talk with your spouse and come up with some ideas that interest you both. What I present to you here sounds wonderful to me and my husband, but you may have another idea that you like better. That’s where our first tip came in: Communication!

1. Candlelight Dinner at Home

This is my favorite! I married the best cook on the planet (at least, I think so). I love dressing up the table while he prepares a meal, and we dine as if we were at a fancy restaurant. No sitter? No problem! This works perfectly after the kids are asleep. Serve their meals earlier, get them to bed, and then enjoy a peaceful dinner with your spouse.

2. Repeat Your First Date

Reliving your first date can be magical, though it might not be as budget-friendly for those who went all out. For us frugal folks, it’s perfect. It requires some preparation and a sitter, but the joy of reminiscing together is worth it. Discuss what you both remember about that special day and work together to recreate it. The greatest part is that you are working together!

3. Game Night

I absolutely love games! Whether with family or friends, game nights are a blast. I could have a game night every week and be happy. There is just something about being together and laughing. Great news is you and your spouse can do this one if you can’t find a sitter. You can even make it a double date with another couple. The key is to pick a game that gets you and your spouse interacting, like Uno, Battleship, or Phase 10. Video games that require teamwork can also be fun if that’s your thing.

4. Take a Drive

Skip dinner out and save money by eating at home first. Then, hop in the car and drive somewhere scenic. Find a spot to stargaze, visit a nearby river or lake, or explore new roads. Getting lost can be part of the adventure!

5. Relax on the Couch

Can you tell by now that I love being home? Our family stays on the go constantly that I love being at home with them. This one is open for you to decide how you will relax on the couch. Whether you watch a movie with popcorn, enjoy hot tea or coffee, read a book together, or just snuggle, the goal is uninterrupted quality time. Turn off your phones and enjoy each other’s company.

One of our favorite pastimes is thrifting. We love doing it with our kids, but when it’s just the two of us, it’s a special treat. We usually eat with the family before heading out to local thrift stores. If we want to make a day of it, we find a sitter or bring the kids along.

I’m sure you have plenty of budget-friendly date ideas in mind. My hope is to inspire you to set a date with your spouse. Remember, having kids doesn’t mean the end of date nights. Keep the romance alive! If your spouse doesn’t make the first move, take the initiative yourself. Start planning date nights today and keep them going. They’ll catch on and might even start planning them too.

Here is a great resource for you and your spouse to check out: 52 Uncommon Dates!

Check out my YouTube video with more romantic and budget-friendly date ideas from people just like you and me below!

Welcome back to our Marriage Monday series! Last week, we talked about the importance of effective communication in marriage. Today, we’re diving into an equally critical topic: conflict resolution. Every couple experiences disagreements, but how you handle these conflicts can make or break your relationship. So, let’s explore some practical tips to help you and your spouse navigate conflicts constructively.

Tip #1: Acknowledge the Inevitable

Max Lucado, in his book When God Whispers Your Name, stated, “Conflict is inevitable, but combat is optional.” The first thing you need to realize is that there will always be some type of conflict in your marriage. It is a natural part of any relationship. However, you have the option of deciding whether to step into combat mode or not. Instead of avoiding disagreements, focus on handling them in a healthy, constructive manner.

I, for one, have to keep myself in check when it comes to conflict. My husband likes to “poke the bear” when I am upset, and if I am not careful, I will fly off the handle when he does. We have both had to learn how each other deals with conflict. Remember, it’s not the presence of conflict that defines a strong marriage, but how you deal with it. When you accept that conflicts are inevitable, you can approach them with a more open and positive mindset.

Tip #2: Stay Calm and Listen Actively

Okay, so I just pointed out that my husband likes to “poke the bear.” There are times I wonder if he does it intentionally. However, he has shared with me that sometimes he doesn’t realize things are as serious as they are. He always tries to find humor in situations, but he realizes there are moments to proceed with caution. In most of those times, I have warned the family ahead of time that momma isn’t in the mood.

When tempers flare, it is easy to interrupt and escalate the situation. We start pointing out each other’s faults and failures. We play the “blame game.” Yet, the first step to resolving conflict is to stay calm. Simply take a deep breath and practice active listening. This means that you REALLY listen to your spouse’s perspective without interruption or thinking about how you will respond when they finish.

A great way to practice active listening is to repeat back to your spouse what you heard them say. For instance, my husband and I have an ongoing joke about our “one car key fob.” We used this situation for one of my class projects. He stated that when I don’t put the key back on the rack, it frustrates him. I looked him in the eye and told him that what I heard was that he felt frustrated by my lack of attention to what was important to him.

It sounds super simple, but when you take the time to let them know you hear what they are saying, it shows your spouse that you are engaged, and it helps to avoid any misunderstandings.

Tip #3: Focus on the Issue, Not the Person

First and foremost, you need to remember that you are a team. When you married, you changed “me” to “we.” You must learn to work together to solve the problem. One great way to do this is to list the ways that each of you contributes to the problem.

For instance, our key fob conflict resulted in the following from both of us:

My husband: “I fuss” and “I nag and point out the obvious.”

Me: “I leave them in my purse.” “I have my hands full,” and “I point out that he doesn’t always do it.”

Yes, we had a great laugh over this, but it made us both realize that neither of us was solely to blame. We were both at fault in the situation. We both needed to mind our tongues. Personal attacks and blame can escalate conflicts and damage your relationship. So if you feel things starting to get heated, then you definitely need to read the next tip.

Tip #4: Take a Timeout if Needed

We had a marriage seminar at our church one year, and the couple that taught it had been married for 50 years. What an accomplishment! They were still so in love with each other. You could tell just by the way they spoke and acted with one another. When they spoke on conflict, they stated that when things start to get too heated, it is best for one of you to call a timeout. This way, you do not say something you will regret in the heat of the moment.

I, for one, do not like to have to say, “I’m sorry.” Taking a timeout is one of the best ways for me to sleep better at night. This gives me a chance to cool down and come back as a rational adult when we meet again. However, remember, if you call a timeout, you MUST set a time to come back and reconvene. Take a 15- or 30-minute break. Take 1 hour or even 24 hours. You choose what works best for both of you, but make sure that you meet back up to resolve the issue.

Tip #5: Compromise and Find Common Ground

As already mentioned, you are both in this together. There comes a time when you may have to compromise. You need to work together to find a middle ground where you both feel satisfied. There may be some give-and-take involved, but it is essential for maintaining a balanced and healthy marriage.

A great way to do this is to brainstorm some ideas. Each of you lists five possible solutions to the problem. Remember that you cannot judge or criticize any of the suggestions at this moment. Just write down the first things you can think of.

Next, discuss and evaluate each of the solutions, and then finally agree upon one solution to try. Once you’ve made your decision together, figure out how each of you will work towards the solution. Set a date to meet back up and discuss your progress.

I would love to go into depth and tell you our solutions for the “one key fob,” but it would take too much time. So, I have created a quick little short for you to view that will maybe bring a little laughter into your life. You can check it out on YouTube at Makin’ Macon!

Tip #6: Seek Professional Help if Needed

Listen, I have said it before in my previous post: I am not an expert on marriage advice. I am sharing what has worked to keep us married these past 25 years. With that being said, I know our “one key fob” situation is very minute in comparison to some issues. There are some situations where even taking these steps to resolve conflict will not work. In those situations, do not hesitate to seek professional help!

Your marriage matters! Do whatever it takes to keep it going and alive. Don’t let it die. There is no shame in asking for help; it shows your commitment to strengthening your marriage. Do your research and find a licensed marriage and family therapist (LMFT) in your area, or consider online counseling services if that is more convenient.

Conflict resolution is a vital skill in any marriage. By staying calm, listening actively, using “I” statements, focusing on issues, taking timeouts, compromising, and seeking professional help when needed, you can turn conflicts into opportunities for growth and deeper connection. Try incorporating these tips into your relationship and see how they can transform your interactions.

I would love to hear what strategies you use to resolve conflicts in your marriage. Share your tips in the comments below! Don’t forget to subscribe to my blog for more Marriage Monday content and check out my upcoming YouTube video for more insights on this topic.

I am so excited to be trying something new on Makin’ Macon! If you are following me on social media, then you know that I have started this thing called “Marriage Mondays.” Each Monday, my goal is to share tips, stories, and inspiration to help strengthen your marriage.

Today’s Topic: Communication!

Now, let me preface this by saying that I am not an expert. However, I have had a little bit of practice, working on 26 years of practice. I have learned that communication is crucial to a marriage. When communication is practiced in a marriage, trust becomes a dominant trait. This leads to a fulfilling relationship. It builds intimacy and emotional connection. Plus, it leads up to our next blog post topic, Conflict Resolution, which we will cover next time.

I read a quote recently by Tony Gaskins:

“Communication to a relationship is like oxygen to life. Without it, it dies.”

Are you one of those who becomes silent when your spouse does or says something you don’t agree with? Eventually, the “silent treatment” becomes an infected thorn. If you don’t treat it, it will continue to get more and more painful the longer you wait to remove it. This is why it is better to communicate with your spouse what you are feeling than to keep it all hidden inside. This doesn’t mean that you go charging like a raging bull and say things that are mean and hurtful. This just gives you permission to talk to your spouse in a calm manner and let them know how you are feeling.

I would hate to start a new job, and there would be no communication as to what I was expected to do. If I didn’t know what to do, then I would be as lost as a goose. But with communication, I can start the job with confidence and know exactly what is expected of me every hour of every day.

In a previous blog post, “We’re Just Friends,” I went into detail about mine and my husband’s story and how it all began. I so wish that we had been equipped with the knowledge we now have at the beginning of our marriage. Our first few years might have been so different.

Why Communication is So Important in a Marriage

I am going to be a little vulnerable here and tell you an embarrassing but funny story. My husband and I had not been married for very long. We had gotten into an argument about who knows what. Apparently, it was so petty that neither of us can remember what it was about. What we both remember, though, is what happened as a result of the argument.

I am extremely stubborn, and so is my husband. So when our minds are made up about something, we have a hard time convincing the other about our point of view. We lived on a back road and were driving along, and I think I said something that struck him the wrong way. He instantly slammed on his brakes, resulting in my plummeting forward towards the windshield. I was furious! I opened the door, got out, and began walking back towards our house. I can vividly remember him sitting there for a moment and then start backing up the truck. He kept backing up, telling me to get into the truck. I ignored him, that stubborn streak revealing itself so vibrantly, and kept walking. Eventually, he left. He went to our friend’s house without me. I walked the 2 miles home in shoes that definitely weren’t meant for walking, walked in the door, sat down in the chair, pulled off my shoes, and saw the huge blisters on my feet. I started crying.

Communication would have helped so much in this circumstance!

Both of our stubborn streaks got the best of us that day. We look back and laugh at how young and dumb we were. We realize that if we had just taken a moment to talk, things would have turned out so differently.

Communication Tips for a Strong Marriage

Stay Calm and Listen – It is important to stay calm and actively listen during conflict. When we are calm, we can think more clearly and respond more thoughtfully.

Express Yourself Clearly – Use “I” statements and express yourself respectfully. For example, say “I feel upset when…” instead of “You always…”

Avoid Assumptions – Communicate your needs explicitly to avoid misunderstandings. Don’t expect your spouse to read your mind. Be clear about what you need and why.

Regular Check-Ins – Set aside time to discuss your relationship and stay in sync. This can be a weekly date night or a simple evening walk where you talk about how things are going.

Practice Empathy – Learn to understand and validate your spouse’s feelings. Try to see things from their perspective and acknowledge their emotions, even if you don’t fully agree.

Use Positive Language – Focus on constructive and supportive language. Instead of criticizing, try to encourage and uplift your partner. This helps create a more positive and loving atmosphere.

How Communication Strengthens Marriage

Implementing these communication tips can significantly improve your relationship. For example, practicing empathy and regular check-ins can help you feel more connected and in tune with your spouse’s needs. Staying calm and listening can prevent small disagreements from escalating into major conflicts. When you express yourself clearly and avoid assumptions, you reduce misunderstandings and ensure that both of you feel heard and valued.

Thank you for joining me for the first Marriage Monday post! I hope these tips help you as much as they have helped us. Stay tuned for next week’s post, where we will dive into Conflict Resolution. Trust me, you won’t want to miss it!

I would love for you to share your thoughts and experiences in the comments below. I enjoy hearing from you and learning from your stories as well. Let’s keep the conversation going and support each other on this journey.

Don’t forget that you can read the previous blog post, “We’re Just Friends,” to learn more about our personal story and the importance of communication.

One last thing, I would love for you to subscribe to the blog or follow me on social media for more Marriage Monday content. Plus, feel free to share this post with friends who might benefit from these tips.

Thank you for being a part of the Makin’ Macon community. Your support and engagement mean the world to me. Let’s continue to strengthen our marriages together, one Monday at a time.
