The to-do list is long. The schedule is packed. The emotions are heavy. And in the middle of it all, the Lord is whispering a simple but powerful phrase: Be still.

If you’re anything like me, you’ve probably found yourself asking: How am I supposed to keep up with it all?

October came in fast this year, and with it came a season that feels a little more chaotic than usual. Events, expectations, emotions—and underneath it all, this quiet tug from the Lord whispering, “Be still.”

But being still doesn’t come naturally to me.

Maybe it doesn’t for you either.

I like to move. I like to get things done. I like to check boxes and feel like I’ve accomplished something. But lately, I’ve been learning that slowing down isn’t laziness—it’s obedience. And it might just be the most spiritual decision I make all day.

A Real-Life Reminder to Be Still

At a recent doctor’s appointment, he looked at me and said, “Susan, you need to slow down.”

I nodded politely, but inside I was thinking, Slow down? With what calendar? With what margin?

Still, his words stayed with me.

And not just his words, but it’s something the Lord has been dealing with me about during this time of perimenopause. I feel like I’m very aware of what’s going on with my body—even if I don’t completely understand it. I did all the research over the last few years trying to prepare myself for what is to come. My situation has been a little different with PCOS and Endometriosis (something many doctors still do not understand to this day). So to sit and be still just didn’t feel right. But I have known—and I think the Lord has pushed me to know—that it is necessary.

That reminder stirred something deeper in me, sending me back to a verse I’ve heard a thousand times—a verse that echoed the same message God has been whispering all along:

"Be still and know that I am God." — Psalm 46:10

It didn’t feel like a suggestion. It felt like an invitation.

To stop.
To breathe.
To remember Who holds it all together (hint: it’s not me).

I’ve been learning to listen to that invitation. Not just spiritually—but practically. I’ve started finding little ways to pause the noise and rest my mind:

Sitting on the floor to play with my son—even when I have a million things to do.

Soaking my feet in that little foot spa I bought and actually letting myself enjoy it.

Sipping a hot cup of tea before the day takes off like a freight train.

Letting my husband take over for a bit when I feel like I’ve hit a wall.

None of it’s fancy. None of it’s perfect. But it’s intentional.

And that’s the point.

Prefer to listen? You can hear this encouragement here:

What “Be Still” Really Means

When we hear “Be still and know that I am God,” it’s easy to think it means to simply pause and trust. And while that’s part of it, the Hebrew behind “be still” (raphah) actually means to let go, to release your grip, to stop striving.

It’s not passive—it’s active surrender.

It’s me unclenching my hands, loosening my shoulders, and saying, “Okay, God. I’m not holding this together—you are.”

That changes how I sit with this verse. It means I don’t just sit still—I surrender. I let go of the need to be perfect. I let go of my jam-packed schedule. I let go of the guilt for needing rest. And I make space to know—really know—that He is God and I am not.

<img fetchpriority="high" decoding="async" width="683" height="1024" src="https://makinmacon.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/What-It-Means-to-Be-Still-and-Know-God-683x1024.webp" alt="A cozy open book and dried flowers sit on a softly lit table with the quote “Be still doesn’t mean what you think. This quote from the post reminded me that stillness takes intention, not inaction.

Why Learning to Be Still Matters

If you’ve been feeling overstimulated, stretched thin, or emotionally drained—can I encourage you?

You’re allowed to pause.
You’re allowed to breathe.
You’re allowed to rest.

And not because everything is done. Not because your world is perfectly in order. But because God didn’t ask you to carry it all. He asked you to trust Him.

Sometimes trusting Him looks like moving forward in faith.
Other times? It looks like sitting down and letting Him carry you.

You don’t have to earn rest.
You don’t have to justify it.
You just have to say yes to the invitation.

Be still. Breathe. He’s already working.

Every season has its own rhythm. Sometimes it’s a steady, beautiful beat that feels effortless—and other times, it’s more like clumsy drum practice in the church when the worship team is still figuring out the song. We all have those seasons where the rhythm is off. Maybe it’s a new school year, a change in your work schedule, a move, or just the daily grind wearing you thin.

For me, one of the biggest rhythm shifts happens when we move from the slow pace of summer into the structure of a new homeschool year.

Learning to Adjust

We’re homeschooling again this year, and I’m determined for it to run more smoothly than last year. That first year was a huge learning curve. I’ve shared about it in another post: The Truth About Our First Year Homeschooling.

At first, I had no idea what I was doing. Consequently, I had to put my “get it done” mentality aside and learn to relax through the process. This year, I’m still learning—but I’ve found a simple win: giving my son and daughter a checklist for the day.

No fancy apps, just bullet points in my phone’s notes they can check off. As a result, it keeps us all on track without being rigid. Sure, we veer from the list sometimes, but more often than not, we’re all happier with the rhythm.

Opposites in Marriage

I married a man who thrives on spontaneity, while I thrive on plans. He likes to decide as we go; I like to map it out ahead of time. His way can throw me for a loop, but it’s good for me—it keeps me from becoming too stiff. In turn, my structure has helped him too. We’ve grown from learning each other’s ways, and our kids have taught us both to stretch in new directions.

However, when God changes the rhythm? That’s a whole different adjustment.

Prefer to listen? You can hear this encouragement here:

A Swift Move That Changed Everything

Several years ago, after almost seven years of marriage, I was in prayer when I heard the Lord say, “Your move will be swift.” Naturally, I brushed it off. I loved our quiet little life out in the sticks, near family. Moving wasn’t in my plans.

Meanwhile, my husband and I had been praying to be used more in ministry, and we were happily serving as Youth Pastors at the church I grew up in.

Then one day, while visiting friends in Colorado, our car overheated climbing a mountain. We pulled over, and the phone rang. On the other end was someone asking if we’d consider pastoring a home missions church in Texas.

Texas?! No jobs, no house, no plan—just hotter weather and a whole lot of unknowns. Nevertheless, God confirmed it through prayer, a dream, and even the quick sale of our home after months with no offers.

Within a week, we were packing everything into storage and a trailer, moving toward something we couldn’t fully see but knew God had called us to.

Talk about having your rhythm completely upended.

5 Powerful Reminders for When Your Rhythm Feels Off

When your rhythm is disrupted, it’s easy to lose focus and let worry take over. These five reminders have anchored me in seasons when everything felt uncertain, and I hope they will do the same for you:

Find a Place to Pray – First, make space to talk with God honestly about your fears, frustrations, and hopes. Prayer shifts your perspective and aligns your heart with His.

Ask God to Cleanse Your Heart and Bring Peace – Next, when your mind feels cluttered, ask Him to wash away anxious thoughts and replace them with His calm.

Get into His Word – Then, let Scripture steady you when everything else feels shaky. Even a single verse can keep you grounded in truth.

Fast – Sometimes we need to quiet our bodies to hear God more clearly. As a result, fasting removes distractions and makes space for His voice.

Take One Small Step – Finally, remember you don’t have to fix everything at once. Just start where you are and trust Him with the next step.

Learning from Joseph’s Rhythm Shifts

I think of Joseph. His rhythm shifted over and over—from living with family, to slavery, to serving in Pharaoh’s home, to prison, and finally to a position where he saved his family and a nation.

When God moved us to Texas, I couldn’t see the full picture any more than Joseph could when he was in prison. All I knew was that my rhythm was gone, and I was stepping into the unknown. But just like Joseph’s obedience positioned him to save a nation, our obedience opened doors in ministry we never could have imagined. In other words, what felt like a complete disruption was actually God setting the stage for something greater.

Genesis 50:20 says, “You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives.”

Joseph’s story—and our own—remind me that God’s hand is at work even when the rhythm feels chaotic. Trusting Him in those moments allows us to see the beauty of His plan when the pieces finally come together.

If this speaks to your heart, pin it so you’ll have it handy on the days your rhythm feels a little off.

Walking Forward in His Rhythm

If your rhythm feels off right now, take heart—God has not lost track of you or your story. The beat may sound unfamiliar, but He is still the One leading the song. Therefore, trust the process, lean in to His timing, and allow Him to guide your steps one measure at a time.

Never in a million years did I think I would be a homeschool mom. As many who follow already know, life threw us a curve ball last year—and suddenly, we were experiencing our first year homeschooling.

I had no idea what I was doing, and this post shares the truth about our first year homeschooling: the wins, the worries, and what curriculum we used.

We had always attended an Accelerated Christian Education (A.C.E.) school and didn’t know anything different. Sure, I had helped teach at the school before, but there was always a team. Time changed—and suddenly I was the only teacher. I was scared. My son requires a lot of attention, and I was afraid of not getting it right.

If you’re unfamiliar with A.C.E., it’s a solid Christian-based, self-paced curriculum. It focuses on independent learning, character building, and Bible integration. Students work through “PACEs” (Packets of Accelerated Christian Education) independently at their own speed. It’s great for families looking for a structured, traditional format—and I still highly recommend it. They believe in what they do and provide families with a strong academic foundation.

Why We Needed a Different Approach During Our First Year Homeschooling

That said, I knew my son needed something a bit more interactive to keep his attention at home. He is incredibly smart but thrives with hands-on learning. (Note: I’m not speaking negatively about him here—just sharing how I had to adjust as a mom.)

After a conversation with my sister-in-law—whose son learns similarly—I decided to try The Good and the Beautiful. Was it worth it? Absolutely. Did it require work? Absolutely. But my son loved it.

The Good and the Beautiful Curriculum Review from Our First Year Homeschooling

Why We Loved It:

Offers beautifully designed curriculum for Language Arts, Math, Science, and more

Language Arts (Levels K–8) and Math (Levels K–5) are available as free PDF downloads on their site

Lessons are colorful, engaging, and often incorporate nature, art, and hands-on learning

Short, manageable segments that work well for active learners

The curriculum made learning fun and kept my son involved throughout the day. However, science and social studies didn’t stick as well. The content was solid, but the format just didn’t hold his attention consistently.

Why We Switched to Time4Learning Mid-Year

So we pivoted after the new year and gave Time4Learning a try—specifically for Science and Social Studies.

What Worked with Time4Learning:

100% online, interactive format with animated lessons

Self-paced, offering built-in quizzes and review tools

Flexible structure that allowed us to supplement only the subjects we needed

It challenged my son while keeping his attention through video and audio content

Sure, we had some tough days. But by the end of our first year homeschooling, we finally found a rhythm that worked.

I had to learn to adjust my expectations, too. I’m naturally a “check-it-off-the-list” kind of person. My kids? They tend to lean more toward the “it can wait” attitude—thanks to their dad. So I had to learn to slow down.

Hands-On Learning in Real Life

Some of our most meaningful learning came outside the workbook. My son loves helping in the kitchen—so we counted baking as class some days. We gardened together, talked about bugs and compost, and explored life skills that matter just as much as test scores.

One of his absolute favorite activities was a volcano experiment we did using the UNGLINGA Science Kit, a generous gift from a wonderful lady in our church. The kit is packed with over 70 STEM experiments—from erupting volcanoes to fruit circuits—and was such a fun, educational addition to our homeschool curriculum. If you’re looking for a hands-on science supplement, I highly recommend it!

One of our favorite homeschool science activities! This volcano experiment from the UNGLINGA kit was a huge hit. Save it to try later!

What My High Schooler Chose: Power Homeschool

As for my daughter, she chose to continue with A.C.E. last year because it was familiar. But after seeing her brother enjoy his lessons so much, she decided to switch this year to Power Homeschool. She’s entering 11th grade and is eager to explore electives while helping with our family business.

Why She’s Excited About Power Homeschool:

Offers monthly subscriptions, no long-term contracts

Access to core classes and a wide range of electives (business, art, foreign languages)

Includes pre-recorded video lessons and automatic grading

Ideal for independent, motivated learners in middle and high school

She enjoyed A.C.E. and learned a lot, but she was ready for a fresh experience—and Power Homeschool provides that flexibility.

Why We Believe in Homeschooling

Some may wonder why we homeschool rather than choosing public school. I believe every family deserves the freedom to make that decision.

In our case, it became clear when people in our community and friends of our kids affirmed that this was the better choice for our family.

Homeschooling is not for the faint of heart. Some moms may breeze through it—but many of us are learning as we go. It’s not always sitting at a desk from 8 to 3. It’s life, woven into learning. It’s math in the kitchen. Science in the backyard. Lessons in patience—for both teacher and student.

Our TCAP Testing Results Gave Me Peace

The ultimate reassurance came when we received our TCAP testing results. It’s a state-required test here in Tennessee. I wasn’t too worried about my daughter, but I had serious doubts about how my son would do—especially with spelling. He reads well but struggles with spelling. Imagine my surprise (and relief!) when his scores came back higher than expected.

It reminded me: I am doing okay.

Final Thoughts on Our First Year Homeschooling

To every mom reading this—if you’re just starting your first year homeschooling or still figuring out what works best for your child—I see you. I know the fears, the second-guessing, the sleepless nights wondering if you’re doing it right. I’ve been there. And while it’s not always easy, it is worth it. You’re showing up, you’re learning alongside your kids, and that’s something to be proud of.

So here’s my prayer for the coming year— That I would let go of the reins a little more. That our homeschool days would flow with peace, not pressure. That my kids would not only learn but enjoy the process.

And that I would remember this: learning isn’t about checking off boxes. It’s about shaping hearts, building memories, and trusting that God’s got this journey in His hands.

Wondering how to survive your first year homeschooling?
I cannot believe that today marks two years since I hit publish on the very first blog post here at Makin’ Macon. What began as a simple step of obedience has grown into a space full of encouragement in chaos. If you haven’t read that beginning chapter—‘In the Beginning…’—be sure to go and check it out.

God’s Unexpected Call to Blog

Stepping into the blogging world was never something I had planned. Growing up, you know how they always ask what you want to be when you grow up? I never had a clear answer. At one point, I leaned toward journalism. I even took classes for it in school. I loved creating church bulletins each week and even mailed out monthly ones to anyone who wanted them (I’ll include a photo of one for fun!). But every time I tried to step into that door professionally, it never opened.

One of my favorite creative throwbacks—these were the monthly bulletins I designed and mailed out for our church nearly 30 years ago!

Instead, right out of high school, I went to work at a local real estate office. The broker took me under her wing, and I became the go-to girl for everything—from creating brochures to bringing that office into the digital age. (Yes, I’m that old!) I learned so much in that season and made some dear friends, but I knew deep down it still wasn’t my forever purpose. God had other plans.

The Pastor’s Wife I Never Planned to Be

As a teenager, I boldly said I would never marry a preacher or a pastor. I didn’t. But God has a beautiful sense of humor—because here I am, a pastor’s wife of almost 20 years. What a ride it’s been!

Makin’ Macon was born during one of the most chaotic seasons of my life. I was walking through hardship and loneliness, particularly in ministry. I’ve always written in journals to process my thoughts, and when God nudged me to start a blog, I hesitated. Oh, I made every excuse you can think of. But deep down, I wanted to help other pastor’s wives who might feel the same way I did: faithful, but isolated.

Encouragement in the Chaos

What’s wild is how this blog quickly became a space for all women. Women juggling motherhood, homemaking, ministry, and all the messy parts of life. It’s grown into a place where anyone can find:

Faith-based encouragement

Easy, no-nonsense recipes

Homemaking tips that don’t require perfection

And most importantly, it’s a place where you don’t have to pretend. You don’t have to keep up with the Jones‘. You can show up in the chaos, and know that God is still right there with you.

My Walk, Shared With You

If you’ve read any of the encouragement posts here, you know they come straight from my walk with the Lord. They’re not manufactured or planned months in advance. They’re lived, prayed through, and shared as He leads. I always pray they meet you right where you are.

There have been many moments when I’ve asked God, “Are You sure You still want me to do this?” And right when I feel unsure, He sends a comment or email from one of you letting me know how something I wrote encouraged you. Or maybe it was a recipe that helped your week go smoother. Or an oil blend that brought relief.

YOU are the reason I keep showing up. God uses your words to remind me that this work is for His glory, not mine. I may never meet many of you in person, but I feel connected to this little community in such a powerful way.

No Perfection Required—Just Faithfulness

Starting this blog was never about building a brand. It’s always been about pointing you to Jesus. My hope has always been that when you read a post or an email, you feel a little lighter, a little stronger, and a little more reminded that God doesn’t expect perfection. He just asks us to be faithful.

Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward.

As a kid, some of my favorite memories were riding 3-wheelers (yes, I’m that old), eating watermelon (or at least trying to—I’ve never been a fan), and watching fireworks light up the sky with cousins, neighbors, and church family. We played croquet in the yard, volleyball on makeshift courts, and shared meals off paper plates with plastic forks—sometimes with deviled eggs, sometimes just simple summer food. It wasn’t always the 4th of July — but it was time well spent.

Those moments mattered—not because they were grand or picture-perfect, but because they were spent together. As we approach this holiday, let’s talk about how to prepare your heart and home for a meaningful 4th of July rooted in connection, gratitude, and joy.

Prepare Your Heart: Be Present With the People You Love This 4th of July

We often talk about freedom on the 4th of July—freedom fought for, celebrated, and remembered. But there’s another kind of freedom that matters deeply too: the freedom to slow down and be fully present with the people God has placed in your life.

Whether you’re gathering with your church family, spending time with grandparents, cousins, or close friends, these moments matter. I’ve lost all my grandparents now, and while I miss them deeply, I’m so thankful for the memories we created—meals around the table, long summer evenings, and just being together.

Ask yourself:

Who can I intentionally spend time with this week?

What simple traditions can I start—or bring back—that invite connection and joy?

You don’t need a perfect plan. You just need open hands, a little margin, and a grateful heart.

"Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves." – Romans 12:10

Prepare Your Home for a Meaningful 4th of July

Your home doesn’t need to look like Pinterest to hold sacred space. Preparing your home for a meaningful 4th of July is about making room for joy, connection, and community.

Here are a few simple ways to do that:

Host a laid-back porch picnic with burgers, cobbler, and conversation

Play music that lifts spirits and sets a tone of peace

Light a candle, tidy just one area, and let the rest be what it is

Invite others in, even if it’s last-minute or imperfect

Have you ever looked at your calendar, your to-do list, your laundry pile—and just wanted to crawl under the covers with a chocolate bar and your Bible? If so, you’re not alone. Honestly, this is often the very moment we’re invited to flourish when life feels chaotic—not by fixing everything, but by learning to grow right in the mess.

There are days when I wonder how I’ll make it through the month—let alone the next hour. I set the goals, make the plan, color-code the calendar, and still… chaos has a way of sneaking in like a toddler with sticky hands.

And it’s in those moments—right smack in the mess—that I’ve learned the most about how to flourish when life feels chaotic.

What Does It Mean to Flourish When Life Feels Chaotic?

The word flourish means to grow or develop in a healthy and vigorous way—especially when the environment is favorable. And let’s be real: environment does matter. It’s not always about having the perfect setting, but ignoring your surroundings can absolutely stunt your growth.

Psalm 92:12–15 says:

“The righteous will flourish like a palm tree... planted in the house of the Lord, they will flourish... They will still bear fruit in old age, they will stay fresh and green.”

I recently read a commentary that said palm trees don’t even start producing fruit until they’re about 30 years old—and the older they get, the more fruitful they become. If that doesn’t speak to the weary heart wondering if she’s “past her prime,” I don’t know what will.

How Your Environment Impacts Spiritual Growth

Speaking from experience—if my house is a wreck, with things scattered everywhere and no sense of order (even if it’s not spotless), my anxiety goes through the roof. The noise, the mess, the chaos… it all compounds.

If there’s constant tension between you and your spouse—short answers, raised voices, emotional distance—it’s hard to find peace, let alone flourish.

If your interactions with your kids feel more reactive than intentional, or you haven’t had a moment to just be with them, that starts to wear on your heart. And let’s be honest, when our time with the Lord is missing or rushed, our roots feel dry and disconnected.

It’s like a plant—without water and light, it begins to wilt. Same with us.

But here’s what I’ve learned: even when the environment isn’t ideal, small changes make a big difference. A five-minute tidy-up. A deep breath before reacting. A whispered prayer over the dishes. A cup of coffee and one Psalm.

Sometimes the soil is rocky, but roots still grow deep when they’re searching for the Living Water.

Before we dive into the practical, let’s be honest—chaos isn’t always external. Sometimes it’s the storm swirling inside us that makes everything harder. But here’s the good news: you don’t have to wait for calm to grow in grace.

When Chaos Takes Over: Learning to Flourish Anyway

This year did not go as planned. We didn’t set out to homeschool. My son and I are two totally different creatures—he’s free as a bird; I’m “let’s get it done and do it efficiently.” It’s stretched me in ways I didn’t know I needed stretching.

I inherited my mama’s go-getter personality: list-maker, perfectionist, fixer. And while those traits can be a gift, they also make it hard to breathe when the plan falls apart.

But here’s the shift I’ve been learning: flourishing doesn’t mean everything’s perfect. It means leaning in—even when nothing looks like you expected.

God doesn’t call us to perfect routines. He calls us to His presence. That’s where real growth begins.

How to Flourish When Life Feels Chaotic: Practical Ways to Grow

1. Start Your Day with the Word to Flourish Spiritually

I know—you’re tired. You’ve got littles clinging to your legs or teens who test your nerves. But I promise, five minutes in the Word can shift your entire day. Sing while you rock the baby. Pray while you stir the soup. Whisper Scriptures while you drive. The Lord hears it all.

And believe me, I’ve seen what happens when I don’t start my day with Him. It’s not pretty.

Even if it feels like you’re only catching tiny moments of truth, those moments stack up. They form the foundation that helps you flourish when life feels chaotic.

2. Stop and Smell the Roses (Literally)

The other day, my daughter looked at me and said, “Mom, you’re always busy doing something.”

Ouch.

I thought I was managing things well—meal prepping, homeschooling, blogging, ministry-ing. But sometimes, the best thing I can do is pause. Sit. Look her in the eyes. Go outside and breathe.

Even homeschool looks different for us now. Less “sit still and do the workbook,” more “go outside and count the frogs.”

Let’s be honest—a walk in the yard or five minutes on the porch with a cup of tea can do wonders for a weary soul.

3. Schedule Time for You

This one feels impossible. But it’s not selfish—it’s survival.

I talked about this in my hormone support blend post, and let me tell you—I know this works because I’ve lived it. I still do. There are days I’ve had to step away, close my bedroom door, and grab a hot shower while my husband takes over with the kids. It’s not a luxury—it’s a necessity. I’ve learned that I have to check out for a minute so I can come back refreshed and ready to pour into my family again.

Even if it’s just five minutes with the door closed and the diffuser going, or a few deep breaths behind the bathroom door—take the time. You cannot pour from an empty cup. (And if you’re running on caffeine and fumes… I see you. Been there.)

You don’t need a weekend getaway to rest. Sometimes, it’s just a foot soak and a deep breath in the middle of a chaotic Tuesday.

Want to try my go-to hormone support blend? Click here for the full recipe gift set you can DIY or give to a fellow mom who needs a break.

4. Connect With Other Women in the Word

Flourishing in chaos often comes down to community. Whether it’s your church small group, a mom friend who brings over coffee, or someone who simply reminds you to breathe—we weren’t meant to do life alone.

Even a text that says, “Praying for you” can reset your entire perspective.

Not sure where to begin? That’s why I created my 5-Day Devotional for Women Who Do It All. It’s short, grace-filled, and designed for busy hearts who need real refreshment.

5. Don’t Forget—You’re Still Growing

Psalm 92 reminds us that even in old age, the righteous will bear fruit. That means you’re not done yet. Whether you’re 25 or 65, your roots go deeper, your faith grows stronger, and your influence becomes richer.

And those grays? Proverbs 16:31 calls them a crown of splendor. (If that’s true, then I must be royalty.)

“The Lord is upright; He is my Rock.”
—Psalm 92:15

That’s the secret right there. It’s not in the planner. It’s not in the perfect routine. It’s in Him.

When we anchor ourselves in His truth, we flourish in ways that schedules and systems never could.

Struggling to feel grounded in a busy season? These grace-filled steps might be just what your heart needs today. Save this for later when you need a gentle reset.

You Can Flourish When Life Feels Chaotic

You may not feel like you’re flourishing right now. You might feel more like you’re floundering. But if you’re rooted in Christ, you are growing—right in the middle of the mess.

Psalm 1:3 reminds us,

"He shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper."

This verse is such a beautiful picture of what it means to flourish when life feels chaotic—our surroundings may shift, but when we’re rooted in God, we can still thrive. When we dig in deep—even when the ground feels shaky—our roots tap into something stronger than ourselves. Our fruit will be greater when we flourish in the middle, not just when things feel stable.

And friend, God is right there with you—in the middle of the noise, the laundry, the tears, the laughter. The greatest relief you can find in the chaos isn’t always control—it’s praise. Lifting your hands, your heart, and your voice to Him even when you don’t know what’s next.

So take heart. Even if your calendar is a disaster and your kitchen looks like a flour bomb exploded… you’re still blooming.

God’s grace isn’t reserved for peaceful mornings and tidy houses. It shows up in spilled coffee, broken routines, and the beautiful chaos of raising a family and walking in faith.

You were made to flourish. Not when things are perfect—but right here, right now.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="683" height="1024" src="https://makinmacon.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/1-1-683x1024.png" alt="Woman praying with eyes closed, hands folded near her face; overlay text reads “Flourish in the chaos.
You ever feel like life just keeps picking up speed—like the world hit fast-forward and forgot to tell you? What if slowing down isn’t just about catching your breath—but about honoring God with the pace of your life?

Because let’s be honest—we rush from one thing to the next: lunches packed, emails answered, a quick devotional while reheating our coffee for the third time. And somewhere in the chaos, our souls whisper, “Can we slow down a bit?”.

Here’s the thing: slowing down isn’t lazy. It’s not unproductive. It’s not even counter-cultural. It’s biblical.

“Be still, and know that I am God.” – Psalm 46:10

Need this reminder later? Pin it now and come back when the pace feels too heavy—because slowing down truly honors God.

God doesn’t call us to hustle harder—He calls us to abide.

When Busyness Replaces Slowing Down to Honor God

We wear busy like a badge of honor. I’ve done it. You’ve probably done it, too. We say yes when we should say, “Not today.” We fill our calendars until there’s not even room to breathe, much less rest.

But friend, even Jesus rested. He withdrew from the crowds. He took time to pray, to eat, to sit and be.

If the Savior of the world made time for rest, shouldn’t we?

Why Slowing Down as a Way to Honor God Feels So Hard

Let me just say this—slowing down sounds lovely in theory. But in reality? It can feel downright impossible.

I’m in one of the busiest seasons of my life right now. And I catch myself thinking, If I can just get through this week… if I can just finish this one project… if I can just keep going, maybe I’ll finally catch up—then I can rest.

But here’s the truth: there’s always something else waiting. Another load of laundry. Another appointment. Another need to meet.

And still—God whispers, Stop. Rest. Be still.

I can’t help but think of Jesus. Fully God, yes. But also fully human. I imagine Him surrounded by people who needed healing, teaching, miracles. He saw their pain. He knew their needs. And yet—He still stepped away.

He wasn’t ignoring the needs. He was preparing for what came next.

Jesus rested not because He was weak—but because He was wise.

He understood the purpose of margin. The power of pausing. And if our Savior made space to slow down… surely we can, too. Even when it feels like the world will keep spinning without us (and let’s be honest, it will).

The Gift of Rhythms: Honoring God with Rest

In Stop, Rest, and Eat, I reflected on Elijah’s story and how God instructed him to rest and eat during his lowest moments. That rhythm of grace—pausing to care for our physical and spiritual needs—extends beyond Elijah’s experience. It reminds us that in our own lives, creating space to rest and nourish ourselves is essential.

It’s in saying no to one more commitment.

It’s in taking a walk without your phone.

It’s in pausing before you say yes—asking, “Does this align with what God is asking of me right now?”

Rhythms aren’t just about routines. They’re about intentional space to breathe, listen, and lean into God.

Slowness as Worship: How It Honors God Deeply

Slowing down gives God room to speak. When we’re still, we notice things—His presence, His provision, even His peace. It’s not that He wasn’t there before. It’s just that we were too loud to hear Him.

“Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” – Matthew 11:28

Rest isn’t just for tired bodies—it’s for weary hearts.

Let’s Slow Down and Reflect

What keeps you from slowing down right now? Grab a notebook or scrap of paper and jot it down. Then, write a short prayer asking God to help you trust His rhythm over your own timeline. When you feel like you’re falling behind, remind yourself—rest isn’t wasted. It’s worship.

Still learning to pause (and praying you do too).

Most of us walk into marriage or motherhood with a picture-perfect idea of how life will look, especially when it comes to trusting God’s timing. We dream up scenes of sweet morning coffee chats, well-behaved kids, organized homes, and spouses who instinctively know exactly what we need.

And then real life shows up.

Real life looks a whole lot more like mismatched socks, cold coffee, learning curves, and waiting seasons that stretch our patience and test our faith. Trusting God’s timing when waiting feels hard sounds beautiful in theory—but living it out? Whew. That’s where the real work begins.

If I’ve learned anything through marriage and motherhood, it’s that God’s rhythms rarely look like mine. And yet, when I lean into His timing instead of fighting against it, I find something I didn’t even know I was desperate for: peace.

Learning to Grow Together in Marriage

Learning to trust God’s timing when waiting feels hard was a lesson my husband and I learned early in our marriage. I could tell you story after story about our beginnings in marriage. We were so excited to have our own home and officially say we were married. But that second year? That’s when the rubber met the road.

That’s when we began to realize just how stubborn we both were. How each of us had our own ways of doing things and neither of us wanted to budge. It made for a huge mess.

We were both just plain stubborn. And we were convinced that our way was the right way.

How we did finances? Different. How we cleaned? Different. Where we put things away? Completely different.

But here’s what changed everything—when we finally set our minds to doing things God’s way, that’s when things began to shift. We started setting our selfishness (yes, that’s what it really was) aside and realized if we wanted this marriage to work, both of us would need to take a step back, reevaluate, and let God work through us.

“Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.” — Ecclesiastes 4:12

We were two young kids from completely different backgrounds, trying to come together and create something brand new. And it wasn’t easy. But every time we invited God to be front and center, we were able to navigate those learning curves with a little more grace and a lot more patience.

Trusting God’s Timing in Motherhood

Fast forward a few years and God threw us another curveball. After over five years of marriage, God called us to move to another state to pastor a small home missions church.

We left everything we knew — our family, our comfort zone, and all the plans I thought I had perfectly laid out. Moving 13 hours away with no jobs lined up and no house waiting for us was one of the scariest steps of faith we had ever taken.

But I firmly believe that our obedience in that season opened the door for our first miracle. After ten years of marriage—and after being told we would never have children—we held our first baby in our arms. Trusting God’s timing when waiting feels hard wasn’t just a lesson anymore—it became our testimony.

Years later, after returning home to pastor once again (this time with a home but still no job), God blessed us with our second miracle—a baby boy born a day before our 18th anniversary. Another beautiful reminder that God’s blessings often follow obedience.

But in between those miracles came heartbreak.

At year 14 of marriage, we lost our second child at 21 weeks. And can I just be honest? I wrestled hard with God through that grief. Why? I still don’t know. But even in the middle of all my questions and heartache, I knew one thing for sure—God is faithful.

“He makes everything beautiful in its time.” — Ecclesiastes 3:11

Finding Contentment While Trusting God’s Timing

And let me tell you — trusting God’s timing when waiting feels hard becomes a whole lot harder when we’re frustrated and discontent in the waiting. Learning to be content right where we are, even when life feels messy or uncertain, has been a lesson God keeps bringing me back to over and over again.

“Not that I speak in respect of want: for I have learned, in whatsoever state I am, therewith to be content.” — Philippians 4:11

That’s exactly why I wrote this post: How to Be Content in Every Season: 10 Biblical Steps to Learn Peace. Because contentment isn’t about settling — it’s about trusting. Trusting that God knows what He’s doing. Trusting that His timing is best. And trusting that even in the wait, He is working.

And if you want to go even deeper in building a Christ-centered home (especially when life feels chaotic), this post might encourage you too: How to Build a Christ-Centered Home (Even When Life Gets Messy).

3 Practical Ways to Trust God’s Timing in Marriage & Motherhood

Pray first, react second. Before the words fly or frustration rises, pause. Whisper a prayer. Let God guide your response.

Look for the lesson, not the deadline. Waiting seasons are often growth seasons. Ask God what He’s teaching you instead of focusing on when it will be over.

Have you ever stopped to ask: What does contentment really mean? According to Webster’s Dictionary, it’s “the quality or state of being contented,” or a feeling of quiet happiness and satisfaction. Synonyms include satisfaction, peace, and ease. But here’s something interesting: content as a verb means “to make content; to satisfy.” That means contentment isn’t just a feeling—it’s an action. It’s something we learn to do.

And that’s exactly what Scripture teaches us: to be content is not natural—it’s a learned virtue. It’s not something we’re born with, and it’s not something God simply hands us. Contentment is something He teaches us through His Word, through our experiences, and often through trials.

What Scripture Says About Contentment

Love this verse? Pin it for daily encouragement—a beautiful reminder that contentment is something we learn through Christ.

Paul’s words in Philippians 4:11-12 remind us that contentment is something we learn through experience. The Greek word he uses for content—autarkes—originally means self-sufficient. But Paul redefines it through the lens of Christ: his sufficiency is not in himself but in his Savior.

"Not that I speak in respect of want: for I have learned, in whatsoever state I am, therewith to be content... I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me." – Philippians 4:11-13 (KJV)

Paul wasn’t writing this from a beach house—he was in prison. His contentment wasn’t based on good circumstances; it was rooted in Christ. This truth aligns with 1 Timothy 6:6, which says, “But godliness with contentment is great gain.” And Hebrews 13:5 reminds us to be content with what we have because God has said, “I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.”

Learning to Be Content Is Not Easy—But It’s Worth It

Let’s be honest: contentment isn’t always easy. Especially when you’re dealing with unanswered prayers, real needs, or painful seasons. But here’s the truth that we often don’t want to face—sometimes we are the cause of our own discontentment. It’s not always the circumstances God places us in—it’s how we respond, what we chase, and what we think we deserve.

We mix up needs and wants. God promises to supply all our needs, but we often expect Him to fulfill our wants. That difference can lead to frustration and false expectations.

Contentment is a virtue that must be learned—and God uses life’s difficulties as the classroom. Paul didn’t start his ministry with a peaceful heart in every trial. He learned it through shipwrecks, prison, and hunger. Just like us, he had to walk with God to develop that trust.

“When you have clung to Jesus through pain and problems and experienced His amazing grace, you find joy in Him.” – Jo Ann Levell

The Israelites serve as a cautionary tale. In Joshua 5:6, we’re told that those who murmured and complained in the wilderness were not allowed to enter the Promised Land. They had what they needed, but they let their wants cloud their gratitude.

Let our dissatisfaction become a signal—not to complain—but to ask: What is God trying to teach me here? Is He revealing areas where I need to grow, trust, or let go?

Psalm 37:4-5 gives us a powerful roadmap:

"Delight thyself also in the Lord: and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart. Commit thy way unto the Lord; trust also in him; and he shall bring it to pass." (KJV)

Notice the order: Commit, trust, then delight. Don’t expect God to do something if you aren’t willing to take action. When we commit our way to Him and truly trust His plan, only then do our desires begin to align with His will.

10 Biblical Steps to Learn to Be Content

Here are ten practical, Bible-based ways you can begin learning contentment in your life today:

Trust God’s Provision – Philippians 4:19
Believe that God provides what you need (not want—don’t confuse them). Contentment grows when you trust that He knows what is best for you.

Practice Gratitude Daily – 1 Thessalonians 5:18
Keep a gratitude journal and write down daily blessings. Thank God in prayer for what you have instead of focusing on what you lack.

Avoid Comparison – 2 Corinthians 10:12
Social media and culture encourage comparison, but contentment comes from embracing your God-given life. Focus on your own journey instead of envying others.

Learn to Live Simply – 1 Timothy 6:6-8
Evaluate your lifestyle: Are you choosing material things for satisfaction? Simplify your life by prioritizing what truly matters—faith, family, and purpose.

Shift Your Focus to Eternal Things – Colossians 3:2
The world tells us we need more, but Jesus teaches us to desire the eternal. Invest your heart in God’s Kingdom rather than temporary things.

Rely on Christ’s Strength – Philippians 4:11-13
True peace is not dependent on circumstances but on Christ. Pray for His strength to help you remain content in every season.

Be Generous and Serve Others – Acts 20:35
Giving shifts your focus from what you lack to how you can bless others. Find joy in serving and helping others, which brings a deep sense of fulfillment.

Develop a Heart of Worship – Psalm 16:11
Worship keeps your heart centered on God and reminds you that He is enough. Make worship a part of your daily life—through song, prayer, or reading His Word.

Surrender Your Desires to God – Psalm 37:4
Contentment doesn’t mean never wanting anything, but it does mean trusting God with your desires. Pray and surrender your dreams to God, trusting His timing and will.

Surround Yourself with Godly Influences – Proverbs 13:20
Spend time with people who encourage peace and faith. Limit exposure to influences that stir discontent, such as materialistic or negative environments. Go to church! Find joy in fellowship with others.

I’m Still Learning Too

There are so many things I could list right now that make me feel discontent. Some are material, some physical, and some even spiritual. But when I really pause and examine my life—not through rose-colored glasses, but with honest reflection—I see just how blessed I truly am.

My house might not look like it belongs on Pinterest, but it’s safe and warm. My car might not be fancy, but it’s paid for and gets me where I need to go. I may not have the health I wish for, but those struggles have allowed me to share my story and help others. (Read more in my blog post: The Pain of Unanswered Prayers.)

And I’ll be honest—some of my discontentment is my own doing. I’ve made choices that led me to places of stress or frustration. But even then, God is kind. He teaches me. He reminds me that He is enough.

I’m still learning to be content. Still learning to trust. Still learning to let go of what I think I need and embrace what He’s already provided.

In a world full of “why aren’t you doing it this way?”—it can feel real tough to step out and be different. But if you’re longing to create a Christ-centered home, one where peace, purpose, and God’s presence guide your every decision, then I’m right there with you. I’ve been on this journey, and I can tell you it’s worth it. People may look at you sideways because you chose a different path with your kids, or you said no to that movie everyone’s raving about. But friend, you’re not weird—you’re intentional.

And that intentionality? It shapes the very foundation of your family, marriage, ministry, and home. That’s what building a Christ-centered home is all about.

Why It’s Okay to Be Different

The first verse that comes to mind is:

“Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord” – 2 Corinthians 6:17

Paul wasn’t just talking to any ol’ group—he was speaking to a church wrestling with immorality and pagan influence. Sound familiar? Because, if you read through the New Testament, you’ll find society then looked an awful lot like today.

It’s easy to get caught up in the noise. But we’re called to be holy—set apart.

“Be ye holy, for I am holy.” – 1 Peter 1:16

“Set your mind on things above, not on things of this earth.” – Colossians 3:2

(And yes, I wrote about that one here: Let This Mind Be in You)

The world won’t always understand your choices. That’s okay. God didn’t call us to blend in—He called us to stand firm.

How to Start Creating a Christ-Centered Home

Here’s the good news: You don’t need to have it all figured out. You don’t need to explain your choices to the world. But you do need to keep Christ at the center.

Start with Prayer (Yes, Even the Ugly Cry Kind)

Prayer humbles us. It keeps us grounded when marriage is rocky, when the kids are wild, or when ministry feels heavy. And even when things are smooth, prayer reminds us who’s in control. Spoiler: It’s not us.

First, start your mornings with prayer, even if it’s just five minutes before the day begins. Let your kids hear you pray. Let your spouse see it. Prayer is the heartbeat of a Christ-centered home.

Make Time for Quiet (And No, Hiding in the Closet Doesn’t Count)

Next, quiet time is a reset button. It helps us hear God’s voice and follow His lead. I’m a huge advocate for your time—but let’s not forget to carve out time for Him too.

If you’re a busy mom juggling school runs, laundry mountains, and crockpot meals, your quiet time might be in the car pickup line. That counts. It all matters.

Put Christ at the Center of Your Marriage

Now I love my husband deeply—but we are both stubborn and passionate (read: spicy). If Christ hadn’t been at the center of our marriage? Whew, it would’ve been chaos.

Want to see change? Start by praying for your spouse. I highly recommend The Power of a Praying Wife by Stormie Omartian. If you’re struggling to connect, ask God to soften both your hearts. He is more than capable.

Remember, your marriage is a ministry, too. When you make Christ the glue that binds you together, petty frustrations lose their power.

Raising Kids Who Want to Live for God

Kids are little sponges with ears that hear everything. (Including your sass, mom. Ask me how I know.)

In fact, they watch how we live. So, teach them to pray. Explain the “why” behind your choices. No, you don’t have to explain everything—but when you do, they’ll catch on. They’ll see your faith in action, and that’s powerful.

Read Scripture together. Celebrate wins. Apologize when you miss the mark. Teach them how to forgive. Model what grace looks like.

A Christ-centered home is one where kids don’t just hear about God—they see Him lived out daily.

What Happens When Christ is the Center

When Christ is at the center, your home changes. Peace settles in. Homemaking feels less like drudgery. Loving your people becomes a joy—not a chore.

And if you’re in ministry? It gives you the grace to handle even the hard conversations with love—because you know God’s got your back.

A Christ-centered home becomes a refuge. It’s not perfect, but it’s filled with grace. It doesn’t avoid storms, but it knows who calms them.

You’re Not Alone in This

Ultimately, creating a Christ-centered home doesn’t mean perfect. It means intentional. You’ll mess up (I do too!), but His grace is new every morning. Let’s lean into that.

This kind of home is built day by day. One prayer, one choice, one intentional moment at a time.

So whether you’re scrubbing dishes, homeschooling littles, planning a sermon, or collapsing into bed at 9 PM with dry shampoo in your hair—know this: you are doing holy work.

You’ve got this, friend. And more importantly, God’s got you.

Ready to Start Building Your Christ-Centered Home?

What’s one small way you’re keeping Christ at the center of your home this week? I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments—it encourages more people than you know.
